Defragmentation allows you to sort the contents of your hard drive and such to occupy empty space created when deleting files is. This reorganizes the drive, allowing for faster read speeds. Follow these steps to start the defrag tool in Windows 10.
Open first This PC (my pc) to see the complete list of drives and partitions available on your computer.
View of all drives
Then open the properties of the selected drive with the right mouse button.
Drive properties
In the pop-up window, open the tab Tools.
tool tab
Then launch the Disk Optimizer tool by clicking Optimize click You can find this button in the section Optimize and defragment drive.
Disk Optimization Tool
Once the optimizer has started, select a drive from the list to start defragmentation or optimization. Lastly, press the button Optimizeto start the process.
Start Disk Optimization
Depending on the type of hard drive, the total time may vary. Normally, optimization and defragmentation on mechanical disks, commonly known as HDDs, is rather slow. On the other hand, solid-state disks, also called SSDs, are quickly optimized.
We recommend running this process regularly to improve your computer’s performance. You can also automate it by clicking the button Change Settings in section Schedules optimization used.
Plan disk optimization
Now determine the frequency of the automatic optimization by selecting one of the options from the drop-down menu.
Change frequency of optimization
You can ask Windows 10 to optimize your hard drive on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. A regularly optimized hard disk does not improve the computing speed in any way. Rather, it allows the system to access data more efficiently and improves the overall performance of the computer.
