Nowadays it is very easy change the font on a mobile phone. Most devices come with several fonts installed from the factory. But just because we see a font on our screen doesn’t mean that the person we’re chatting with will see it too.
If we want to change the font in our WhatsApp chats, we have to use a special keyboard. That’s how it’s done.
How to use different fonts in WhatsApp
With this trick it’s really easy to change the font in our WhatsApp chats. And we can use not only one alternative font, but hundreds of them. However, we must use a font app. In this guide we will use fonts.
Getting started in the Fonts app to change the font on an Android device
Once you have the app downloaded and installed on your device you have to do the following:
- Open the Fonts app.
- Tap the Enable Fonts Keyboard button.
- In the menu that appears, enable the Fonts option (on-screen keyboard available).
- Exit and re-enter the Fonts section and tap the second button on the main screen, Switch to Fonts.
- Choose Fonts from the dropdown menu to use the app as the primary keyboard.
- If you like, you can try out the different keyboards on the next screen.
Set up the Fonts app to change the device’s fonts
With that done, it’s time to test the fonts in WhatsApp. If we did everything right the Fonts keyboard is displayed directlywhen you tap in the text field in the chat.
The result of using the Fonts keyboard in a WhatsApp chat
To select the different fonts available, just slide the horizontal menu from right to left. When you see a font you like, just click on it and start typing. Both you and the recipient (or recipients) of the message will see the message written in the chosen font.
How to write in WhatsApp in different formats
Examples of the different text formats supported by WhatsApp
WhatsApp supports at least changing the text formatting. That means you can type in bold, italics, strikethrough and monospace (typewriter). However, there is no special key for it, you have to use a combination of special characters. This is achieved in the following way:
- bold type: Write the text between asterisks. Example: *malavida*.
- Italic: Write the text between underscores. Example: _malavida_.
- Crossed out: Write the text between small letters. Example: ~badlife~.
- Monospaced: Write the text between three accents. Example: “““““.
It might be a bit complicated but all these formats can be combined with each other in any way. The feature is very useful, although at the moment there is no button to automatically change the formatting.
