Die blocking function of WhatsApp can be very useful if you want to prevent a contact from sending you messages or other content. But it can also happen that you just want to take a breather in the communication with a certain contact. In this case, blocking might be too drastic a solution. Is there a way to prevent receiving messages from a contact without having to go that far?
A good solution to this problem can be found in WhatsApp settings. If you want to access it, open the main menu and click on Settings or Settings.
Go to the app settings
Then open Chats settings to continue.
Show chat options
Look at the list of settings and search for Keep chats archived (Archive chats). Click the slider to enable this feature.
Keep archived chats
Now go back to the chat list and select a chat.
Open the chat with the contact
Tap the contact’s name to see more options.
View contact information
Mute the contact’s notifications by tapping the toggle switch next to Mute notifications (Mute notifications) type.
Mute the contact’s notifications
In the pop-up dialog, you tell WhatsApp that you want to mute the user indefinitely and that you don’t want their notifications to appear. Confirm when you have made these settings.
Permanently remove the notifications
Finally, hold your finger down on the conversation for a little longer and tap the archive button.
Archive the chat to stop receiving notifications
What did you achieve with it? From now on, the chats you archive will be hidden even if they receive new messages. Also, since you’ve muted the user’s notifications, you’ll never know if they texted you or not unless you visit the chat archive. If you follow these steps, there are a few things to keep in mind:
- The feature that archives chats applies to all conversations.
- Muting notifications is a setting that only applies to the selected contact.
- The other person doesn’t know that you archived the conversation or muted the notifications.
