Start Windows 10 without a password – this is how it works

With the command “netplwiz” you can save your Windows 10 password so that Windows starts automatically without entering it

To switch off the password query when Windows starts, first press the key combination Windows key + R. In “Carry out”window now give the command

netplwiz

and press Enter. A dialog for managing the system user accounts will then open. Mark the user whose password should no longer be entered.

If no user appears here, it doesn’t matter. In any case, remove the tick next to “Users must enter username and password”, and click OK. You will then have to enter your user name again (if not pre-filled) and your login password (e.g. the password for your Microsoft account) twice.

If you don’t know the username of your current account and the field isn’t pre-filled, press Windows key + R again and enter

%username%

into the field. An error message then appears, but at the very beginning of the message there is your user name, which you then enter in Netplwiz without quotation marks.

From the next system restart, the system will start up automatically. Strictly speaking, the Windows password was not removed, but saved.

Danger:

You should never do without password protection, especially with notebooks, otherwise your system can easily be misused by strangers if you misplace the device or if it is stolen. If entering the password is too tedious for you, Windows 10 in particular offers a whole range of more convenient alternatives – such as face recognition via Windows Hello, a PIN or an image code.

You can activate and configure all of these alternative authentication methods via “Start -> Gear -> Accounts -> Sign-in options”. Only turn off password entry on devices you’re sure no other user can get their hands on.

An extra tip:

So that your system actually starts faster, it is worth taking a look at the programs that start together with Windows 10. So the autostart programs. Right-click the taskbar and then select from the context menu “Task-Manager” out. Change to the tab here “autostart”. This overview now lists programs and services that start together with Windows. For entries you do not want, right-click on them and then select in the context menu “Deactivate” out.
