There are many games similar to Fortnite’s battle royale mode, almost all of which came later, but Fortnite wasn’t the first. We look at some of the most prominent of these.
PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG)
Although there have already been mods experimenting with the battle royale concept, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds was the first video game that popularized the genre. Months later, Fortnite: Battle Royale was released and took the spotlight, but by that time PUBG was already a phenomenon.
Compared to Fortnite, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is a title with a more realistic graphic aspect. On the gameplay level there are no buildingsso knowing how to aim at a distance and avoid being seen by other opponents is much more important, since taking cover is not so easy.
Call of Duty: Warzone
After the success of PUBG and Fortnite, the gaming community waited for a response from Activision, the leader in shooters. The Call of Duty saga didn’t get its own battle royale until 2020, but the long development period served to create an ambitious title in which up to 200 players (in some temporary modes) compete against each other on the same map.
Again, the most striking differences between this game and Fortnite are the realistic visual style of Call of Duty and the impossibility of construction work like we can do in the Epic Games title.
Apex Legends
Another game that stands out within the battle royale genre is Apex Legends. Electronic Arts’ approach differs significantly from its two predecessors, as the gameplay is more comparable to Overwatch.
In Apex Legends we form a team with two other players, each choose a role in the game. Also, the games have a maximum of 60 concurrent players instead of the 100 that Fortnite allows.
Fall Guys
When it comes to playing a non-shooting battle royale title, Fall Guys is one of the most interesting options. Up to 60 people play in his games run to be the first to reach the finish line avoiding all sorts of obstacles.
In these races, players can “troll” their rivals and push them back to the start, or at least lose valuable time to reach the finish line.
Tetris 99
One of the most iconic puzzle games of all time also has a battle royale version. In Tetris 99 we have to defeat 98 other players whose game is displayed on both sides of ours (yes, we see 99 games at the same time).
In this version of Tetris we are standing at all times against an opponent that we select either automatically or manuallyso that each line that we complete is transformed into a line that is randomly placed on our rival’s screen.
